Authors Bio

Ben Phelper was born in 1916 in Aurora,IL. He attended school in California where he eventually worked as an illustrator on Disney's first animated feature. During the same time he learned aerial aerobatics from a Mexican pilot. He joined the Army Air Corp as a lieutenant and retired from the Air Force as a colonel, but his cover story as a POW was that he was simply a staff sergeant.

He was shot down Aug.17,1943, while flying his 17th mission aboard a B-17 Flying Fortress ironically on his way to being dropped behind enemy lines to begin his assigment. He was sent to Stalag 17B near Vienna,Austria, where he stayed for two years until he was freed at the end of the war.

He co-authored the Broadway play Stalag 17, which inspired the movie by the same name starring William Holden. The movie led to the 1960's TV series "Hogan's Hereos".
